What is a CFRE?

The Nonprofit Academy is proud to support the CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) certification.

Since anyone can do fundraising, it's easy to forget that fundraising is a professional career choice. There are standards. And ethics. And researched-based strategies. The CFRE certification helps you set yourself apart as an ethical fundraising professional.

The CFRE certification is the only globally-recognized, accredited certification for fundraising professionals.

CFREs report greater earning potential, increased recognition from colleagues, and more on-the-job confidence.

There are two steps to certification: Completing the CFRE application and passing the CFRE exam.

Initial Certification Application Requirements

The application works on a points system. Candidates must meet requirements in:

  • Education
  • Professional Practice (working in a paid professional fundraising role) – 36 months out of the most recent 5 years
  • Professional Performance (funds raised) – US$1.375 million in most recent 5 years. Candidates who do not meet the dollar requirement may submit Communications and Management projects in lieu of funds raised.

CFRE Exam

The exam has 200 multiple-choice questions on best-practice, ethical fundraising. Once you pass the exam, you’re a CFRE.

Recertification

CFREs recertify every three years to maintain their certification. No exam is required for recertification.
